Fairfax Ryeland Sheep
Our Ryeland flock holds the prefix of Fairfax with our pedigree number of 01785.
The Ryeland Flock Book Society was established in 1903 allowing for the registration of pure bred individuals meeting breed standards. Pedigree Ryeland sheep should have a uniformly strong white fleece free from coarseness, kemp, rusty or black fibres. In 2014 a genetic test became available to Ryeland breeders enabling the identification of pure white sheep; these individuals will consistently produce white offspring even when bred to those carrying the coloured gene. All registered Fairfax Ryeland stock sold from our smallholding from 2015 onwards will have been tested for the coloured gene. Results from these tests are available from the end of July in the year of sale. We also run a Coloured Ryeland flock and as such are happy to produce a small number of coloured offspring from our Ryeland sheep. We firmly believe the quality of our sheep is of paramount importance therefore we retain individuals based on conformation, breed characteristics and ease of management; using the genetic testing as a breeding management tool.
